FAQ
Who is WILDPLASTIC®?
WILDPLASTIC is a team of currently 17 people from different backgrounds who are united by the goal of recovering as much wild plastic waste as possible from the environment and returning it to the recycling cycle. To achieve this, we work hand in hand with collection organizations in regions that are particularly affected by the plastic crisis. We buy the plastic from them, giving the material a new value and feeding it back into the production cycle by making new products from it, such as our WILDBAGS and WILDmailingbags.
What is wild plastic?
The term "wild plastic" describes all the plastic that currently exists outside the closed recycling loop. It is mainly found on streets, illegal and open dumbsides, and in nature, mainly in countries without sufficient waste management and recycling systems. Please note: The wild plastic we use is not ocean plastic. Although it fits the definition, our work starts before the plastic even reaches the water.
What makes your products sustainable?
Our products are tools to fulfill our mission. With them, we want to give wild plastic waste a value again. We do this by improving the working conditions of local collectors, bringing wild plastic back into the recycling cycle and saving CO2 in the process in comparison to virgin plastic. To achieve this, we work closely together with collection organizations and have carried out a product life cycle analysis with our partner Planet A in order to have as much certainty as possible that we are achieving our goals.
You import from abroad. That can't be environmentally friendly!
No product is environmentally friendly in the strictest sense. Not even one from WILDPLASTIC. So the question is rather how our products compare to similar products. If you compare the environmental impact of similar products, our WILD products perform better on average.
And why are you importing plastic at all? There's enough lying around here!
Even though we often see plastic in the environment and like to (rightly) complain about the German waste system, the waste problem here is much less acute than in most other regions of the world. That doesn't mean that we think it's great that most of the waste is incinerated. But most of it is collected and does not end up in the environment, which is not the case in most other regions of the world. There is simply too much waste for the local waste systems and too few buyers for less valuable plastics such as old plastic film.
That's why we want to create a market for this film plastic in fair partnerships and thus ensure that there is less plastic waste in the environment and that the working conditions for the people who collect the wild plastic waste are improved.
Which what kind of organizations do you work?
We work with various collection organizations and are in the process of building long-term relationships with some of them. The payment of the collectors varies from place to place and from organization to organization. What we can say for sure is that all our partners pay more, pay on time and provide a much more stable income than most collection organizations. They also offer collectors and other employees educational opportunities and promotion prospects. The working conditions of collectors are also significantly better than without collection organizations.
What do you think of the collecting organizations and what criteria do you use to select them?
We usually find collecting organizations through our own research or recommendations. We have certain minimum requirements for the selection process. For the delivery of a first container, for example, we have our Cooperation Requirements, which all organizations must agree to. In addition, we conduct many personal discussions in advance to understand how the organization works and whether a partnership is an option.
How do you ensure that your criteria are met?
In addition to the interviews and questionnaires, we often also obtain an assessment from other organizations. Until the first test container, this assessment takes place remotely.
Only after a successful test do we visit the organizations to go into more depth. External audits then follow later. But we have not yet reached this point in any partnership.
It is important to understand that we can never be 100% sure that organizations in our supply chain comply with all requirements. A partnership always involves a certain amount of trust and the understanding that you can't check everything perfectly. With our processes, we try to achieve an appropriate level of security depending on the status of the partnership.
What is the eco-balance of your products?
All our products perform better than the average of comparable products in terms of their environmental impact.
Can the WILDBAG be recycled?
We design all WILDPLASTIC products (e.g. our WILDBAG) so that they can be recycled. In practice, however, this does not mean that this actually happens, and as always, the whole thing is a little more complicated. There are about a million reasons why this is the case. For example, residual waste is almost always incinerated in Germany. For cost reasons, for example, it is usually not worth sorting out and cleaning the garbage bags beforehand in order to recycle them.
We and you can do little to change most of these one million reasons, except to demand politically that we fundamentally change the way we manufacture products and how we dispose of them. The most effective way to do this is through demonstrations and petitions.
Do you really act sustainably?
We have a clear mission: to free the planet from wild plastic waste. To fulfill this mission and ensure that it can never change, we have founded ourselves as Purpose GmbH. As Purpose GmbH, all our actions are focused on this mission and we cannot sell or inherit the company. WILDPLASTIC® always belongs to the people who work in it. The Purpose Foundation ensures this by holding 1% of the voting rights in the company and thus a veto right. More information at: purpose-economy.org
How can I place a B2B order with large quantities?
At the moment we do not yet have a separate B2B store, i.e. we cannot accept your B2B order online, but for large orders >20 big box units you can either contact our sales team to ask for your scale discount or use your existing account on our partner platforms to order our products there.
